Website tucsonvalleyofthemoon.com

A surreal little folk-art wonderland on Tucson's north side — a half-acre of grottos, painted statues, miniature castles, and twisting paths built by an amateur visionary over fifty years. The site is now run by volunteers and only opens for occasional storytelling events and tours, mostly in autumn and around Halloween.

Check the website for open dates — it is hard to predict but worth catching if your visit lines up. Free admission, donations encouraged.

A story
Valley of the Moon was built starting in 1923 by an eccentric postman named George Phar Legler, who created a small kingdom of plaster fairies, dwarves, and underground tunnels in his backyard. He invited children of the neighbourhood in for storybook walking tours; volunteer groups have kept the tradition alive since his death in 1983.
