Henry Wickenburg Pioneer Cemetery

The small pioneer cemetery off Tegner Street holds the graves of Wickenburg's founders and earliest settlers, including Henry Wickenburg himself. It's a tucked-away spot that most visitors miss, and more affecting than you'd expect — the graves tell the compressed story of a gold rush town, with clustered deaths in hard years and epitaphs that are often plain and specific.

The cemetery is maintained and accessible. A short visit is enough, but it's worth combining with the nearby Jail Tree and the Pioneer Street walk.

A story
Henry Wickenburg, who discovered the Vulture Mine and gave the town its name, is buried here. He shot himself in 1905 at the age of 85, after the Walnut Grove Dam burst and destroyed his ranch. He had already given most of his remaining land to the town he founded. The grave is simple, with a small marker.
