A large mesquite tree on Tegner Street that Wickenburg claims was used as its first jail in the 1860s. The story says a lack of a proper lockup led the marshal to chain prisoners to the tree overnight. Whether true or not, the tree has been a town landmark for over a century and is surrounded by a ring of explanatory signage that gives you the full legend.
It's a five-minute stop at most, but entertaining for what it says about how small Western towns built their own mythology. The tree is right in the center of town, easy to find.
