Fort Bowie National Historic Site preserves the ruins of a U.S. Army post that played a central role in the Apache Wars of the 19th century. It is not a drive-up monument: the approach is a 1.5-mile trail through desert country, passing a Butterfield stage station site and a historic cemetery before reaching the fort.
That walk is part of the point. The distance, heat, and open landscape make the history easier to grasp than a roadside plaque ever could.
