Willcox

Southeast Arizona railroad town known for cowboy history, wine country, birding, and Chiricahua access.

Willcox is a small town on I-10 in southeast Arizona, but it is more interesting than its freeway setting suggests. The old railroad core is walkable, the town celebrates singing cowboy Rex Allen with complete sincerity, and the surrounding Sulphur Springs Valley has become one of Arizona's better wine areas.

The strongest reason to linger is the country around town. Wintering sandhill cranes gather on the Willcox Playa, the Chiricahua National Monument is close enough for a day trip, and Fort Bowie sits out in the desert as a historic site you have to reach on foot.

Willcox is not a polished resort town. It is a practical base with a few real local hooks: railroad history, cowboy memory, orchards, vineyards, birding, and one of the Southwest's best mountain landscapes within reach.

Day Trips

Willcox is one of the easier bases for reaching Chiricahua National Monument. Fort Bowie National Historic Site is another strong outing, but expect a desert walk from the trailhead rather than a simple drive-up stop.
