Baldwin Avenue

South Baldwin Avenue, between the I-210 freeway and Las Tunas Drive, is the spine of Arcadia's Chinese food scene. The strip mall after strip mall along these blocks holds some of the best Chinese restaurants in California — regional cuisines from Sichuan, Shanghai, Beijing, and Taiwan, with high turnover, mostly Chinese-speaking clientele, and no Westernised concessions.

The area is part of the broader Chinese restaurant belt that runs from Monterey Park east through Alhambra, San Gabriel, and Arcadia. If you take Chinese food seriously, this strip alone justifies the drive out from central Los Angeles. Park anywhere; walk between three or four places to sample a meal across them.
