Castello di Amorosa

Address 4045 St Helena Hwy N, Calistoga, CA 94515

A 121-room medieval-style castle built over 14 years by Dario Sattui and opened in 2007. It is exactly what it sounds like: a full-scale replica of a Tuscan castle, complete with a moat, drawbridge, great hall, torture chamber, and working winery in the cellar. The obvious question is whether it is kitsch — and the honest answer is that it is, gloriously so, but it is also extraordinarily well built. Sattui used authentic materials and craftspeople and the result is something genuinely strange and impressive.

Wine tours include access to all four levels of the castle. The Cabernet Sauvignon and the estate Gewurztraminer are reliable. Expect crowds, especially on weekends — this is one of the most visited wineries in the Napa Valley.
