Garrapata State Park is a rugged northern Big Sur stop where coastal bluffs, pocket beaches, chaparral slopes, and canyon trails sit close to Highway 1. It has less infrastructure than the better-known parks, which makes it feel wilder even when the road is nearby.
Use it for short bluff walks, wildflower season, or a longer hike into the hills when trails are open. Parking is informal in places and ocean conditions can be dangerous, so treat the coast with caution and check current closures before choosing a route.
