Old Monterey Jail is a compact stop in the historic civic cluster around Colton Hall. Built in the 19th century, it is the kind of plain, heavy public building that says a lot about frontier administration: thick walls, simple cells, and very little romance.
It works best as part of Monterey's Path of History, not as a destination by itself. The aquarium and waterfront get most of the attention, but this small jail helps pull the town back toward its Mexican and early American capital years.
