Monarch Butterfly Grove

Protected eucalyptus grove where western monarch butterflies cluster in winter.

The Monarch Butterfly Grove is one of Pismo's strongest reasons to stop rather than just roll past on Highway 101. From roughly November to February, western monarch butterflies gather in the eucalyptus trees near the southern edge of town, sometimes hanging in dense clusters when the weather is right.

The visit is short but memorable: a flat path, interpretive signs, and volunteers in season pointing out where the butterflies are roosting. Go on a calm, mild day if possible, when the butterflies are more likely to be active.
