One-way scenic loop through multicolored volcanic rock canyon

A 14-kilometre one-way loop through a canyon of volcanic rock streaked with improbable colours — pink, green, yellow, purple, and rust. The colours come from the oxidation of different metals: iron oxides for reds and yellows, mica for greens, manganese for purples. The best colour saturation is on overcast days, but the dramatic shadows of late afternoon give the landscape its most sculptural quality. Artist's Palette — the most photogenic pull-out — is about halfway through.
