Blue Ox Millworks

Blue Ox Millworks at the south end of Eureka is a working Victorian mill that still produces ornamental woodwork using antique machinery — band saws, scroll saws, and lathes dating from the 1890s. The company manufactures the gingerbread trim, spindles, and decorative brackets used in restoring Victorian homes across California and beyond, and the mill tour shows the entire process from raw lumber to finished ornamental details.

The grounds include a Victorian rose garden, a ceramics studio, a blacksmith shop, and a small nature preserve, making it more of an estate than a simple factory visit. Tours run on weekdays and last about 90 minutes; groups should book in advance. It is one of the more unusual attractions in Northern California — a functional piece of Victorian industrial heritage that happens to be very much in business.

A story
Blue Ox Millworks was founded by Eric Hollenbeck as a one-man workshop in 1973 and grew into a working Victorian mill producing architectural millwork, gingerbread trim, and decorative pieces for historic building restoration projects across the country. Hollenbeck built much of the equipment himself from 19th-century designs, making the mill as much a working museum of Victorian-era production techniques as a commercial operation.
