Lost Coast Brewery

Lost Coast Brewery on 4th Street is the best-known craft brewery in Humboldt County, with a taproom in Old Town where the full range of their beers is available alongside pub food. The flagship Great White is a light, hazy wheat beer well suited to the California summer, but the seasonal releases and the darker ales are worth exploring. The taproom has a relaxed, friendly atmosphere — not a tourist trap but a genuine neighbourhood bar that happens to be one of Eureka's most popular.

The brewery also offers tours of the production facility, which has grown considerably since the early days. Call ahead for tour times. The taproom is open daily from lunchtime and tends to get busy in the evenings, especially on weekends when locals fill the tables alongside visitors passing through on the way to or from the redwood parks to the north and south.

A story
Lost Coast Brewery was founded in 1990 by two women — Barbara Groom and Wendy Pound — at a time when the craft beer movement was still in its infancy and female brewery owners were extremely rare. The Great White beer they developed in the 1990s went on to become one of the best-selling craft wheat beers in California, funding the expansion that turned a downtown taproom into a production brewery still headquartered in Eureka.
