The Stockton Creek Preserve is a 200-acre protected area on the outskirts of Mariposa, centred on a reservoir and the oak woodland and chaparral of the surrounding Sierra Nevada foothills. A network of trails runs through the preserve, ranging from short flat walks around the reservoir's edge to steeper routes through the woodland that give good views over the surrounding landscape.
The foothills here are characteristic of the Gold Country: grey pine and blue oak over a shrubby understorey, with rocky outcrops and seasonal wildflowers. Wildlife is present in good numbers — deer, coyote, raptors, and a range of foothill birds. It makes a good alternative for days when Yosemite feels too crowded or when you want some exercise without the drive. Dogs are welcome on leash. Free access.
