A ten-block warehouse district between 10th and 20th streets, centred on R Street, that has developed into Sacramento's primary arts and culture quarter. The district's character comes from its 19th-century industrial buildings — railroad warehouses and cold-storage facilities that served the Central Valley produce trade — most of which have been converted to galleries, studios, restaurants, and event spaces rather than demolished.
The second Saturday Art Walk (held monthly) draws thousands of visitors to the galleries and studios along R Street. Several of Sacramento's best restaurants are in this neighbourhood, along with a growing number of craft breweries and bars. The streetscape remains industrial — loading docks, freight elevators, exposed brick — which gives the neighbourhood a gritty authenticity that contrasts pleasantly with Midtown's more polished feel.
