Donner Lake

Donner Lake is a strikingly beautiful glacial lake, about 3 kilometres long, tucked into a pine-forested valley just west of Truckee. Despite the grim history associated with its name — the Donner Party was trapped on its shores in 1846–47 — the lake is a genuinely lovely place to spend time, particularly in summer when the water is clear and cold and the surrounding mountains are free of snow.

The Donner Memorial State Park occupies the eastern end of the lake, with a public beach, boat launch, and picnic facilities. The water is excellent for swimming, kayaking, and paddleboarding; the clarity and mountain setting make it a better swimming spot than the more crowded Lake Tahoe beaches nearby. In winter, the lake freezes and the surrounding meadows become a cross-country ski area. The sunset views from the lake's western shore, looking back toward the Sierra Nevada crest, are exceptional.
