Wente Vineyards

California's oldest family-owned winery, with a Greg Norman golf course

Address 5050 Arroyo Road, Livermore, CA 94550

Founded in 1883 and now in its fifth generation of family ownership, Wente is the oldest continuously operated family winery in the United States. The estate winery on Arroyo Road has tasting rooms, a fine-dining restaurant, an amphitheatre that hosts a summer concert series, and a Greg Norman-designed 18-hole golf course.

The Wente Chardonnay clone is one of the foundational vines of the modern California wine industry. Tastings are flight-based and cover the estate's range from Sauvignon Blanc to small-lot reserves. The restaurant is excellent. Open daily; reservations advised for the restaurant.

A story
Wente's Chardonnay clone — propagated from cuttings the family brought back from Montpellier in 1912 — is now planted across more than 80% of California's Chardonnay vineyards. It is one of the most influential vines in the state's wine history.
