Chung King Road

Pedestrian lane of old curio shops turned contemporary art galleries

A narrow pedestrian lane lined with red-pillared shopfronts, Chung King Road was built as a tourist row of curio and antique shops and reinvented around the turn of the millennium as a cluster of contemporary art galleries. The combination — peeling old signage, paper lanterns, and white-cube gallery interiors — gives it a particular Chinatown-meets-art-scene character found nowhere else in the city.

The galleries keep limited hours and the scene has thinned from its early-2000s peak, but openings still draw a crowd and the lane is an atmospheric short walk off the main plazas.
