Ice Age fossil museum at the La Brea Tar Pits, with a working paleontology lab behind glass

The George C. Page Museum — now branded as the La Brea Tar Pits Museum — houses the fossils pulled from the asphalt seeps just outside its doors. The galleries are full of Ice Age megafauna reconstructed from the pits: dire wolves (a wall of more than 400 skulls), sabre-toothed cats, the Columbian mammoth, and a giant ground sloth, all dating from the last 50,000 years.

The highlight is the glass-walled Fossil Lab, where you can watch paleontologists clean and catalogue specimens in real time — this is an active dig, not a static collection. Combined with a walk around the bubbling outdoor pits, it makes for an unusually vivid afternoon for both kids and adults.
