The beach break at Manhattan Beach is one of the better surf spots in the South Bay — not the most consistent, but reliably rideable when there is swell running. The waves break close to shore and can get powerful, which suits shortboarders. The surf scene here is competitive and local; don't expect a beginner's paradise.
Beach volleyball is an equally serious pursuit. Manhattan Beach has a claim to being the birthplace of competitive beach volleyball in the United States — the first official beach volleyball tournament was held here in 1960. The courts beneath the pier are used at a high level year-round, and watching players who clearly know what they are doing is entertainment in itself. Every year the Manhattan Beach Open brings top professionals to these courts for one of the sport's most prestigious events.
