Clear Lake State Park

Clear Lake State Park occupies a stretch of the northern shore around Soda Bay, with a campground, boat ramp, and visitor centre. Swimming and kayaking are popular here in summer, and the campground is one of the most pleasant ways to spend a night on the lake. The visitor centre has exhibits on the lake's natural history and the Pomo people who fished and gathered along these shores.

The bass fishing in the park and surrounding waters is excellent — Clear Lake consistently ranks among the top bass fisheries in California. Largemouth bass are the main target, and local guides can be hired through the towns around the lake. Even non-anglers appreciate the uncrowded, workaday atmosphere that distinguishes the lake from trendier California destinations.

A story
Clear Lake State Park sits on Soda Bay, named for the carbon dioxide seeps that bubble up through the lake bottom — a reminder that the entire lake basin is geothermally active. The lake is California's oldest and largest natural freshwater lake, pre-dating the Sierra Nevada, and its age has allowed endemic species to evolve that exist nowhere else.
