Lake Earl Wildlife Area

Lake Earl is a large coastal lagoon north of Crescent City, connected to a second lagoon, Lake Tolowa, by a narrow passage. Together they form the largest natural lake system in California and one of the most important stopover points for migrating waterfowl on the Pacific Flyway. Over 300 bird species have been recorded here.

The Lake Earl Wildlife Area offers walking trails around the lake edges, canoe and kayak access, and good birding year-round. The area has a raw, undeveloped quality — no facilities, minimal signage — which suits the landscape. Access is via Old Mill Road north of Crescent City.
