Humboldt Bay Harbor Cruise

Historic 1910 vessel cruising California's second-largest coastal bay

The MV Madaket, a small passenger vessel that has been running harbor tours since 1910, departs from the foot of C Street for 75-minute cruises of Humboldt Bay. It is a good way to get a feel for the scale of the bay — the second-largest coastal bay in California — and to see the waterfront from the water. The cruise passes the fishing docks, the oyster beds, and the wetland margins that make the bay one of the most important shorebird habitats on the Pacific coast.

Cruises run daily in summer; check seasonal schedules at 707/445-1910. The vessel also runs a sunset cocktail cruise on certain evenings, which has its own resonance given the boat's history.

A story
The Madaket is the oldest operating passenger vessel in the United States, having run continuous service on Humboldt Bay since 1910. During Prohibition it served as a floating cocktail lounge — the owner would take passengers just outside the bay's entrance into federal waters, where local ordinances did not apply.
