Noyo Harbor is one of the last working fishing harbors on the California coast, a small basin at the mouth of the Noyo River where commercial fishing boats still put out to sea and return with catches. It is a genuinely functional place — not a tourist marina dressed up to look like one — and the atmosphere in the early morning, when the boats are heading out, is quietly atmospheric.
From Noyo Harbor you can book whale-watching cruises (January through April are the best months for gray whales), sport-fishing charters for rockfish, salmon, and halibut, and kayak rentals for paddling up the Noyo River. A handful of restaurants sit right on the harbor, specializing in the catch from the boats outside. The bridge over the river at the harbor entrance is a local landmark; from it you look south down the river to the sea.
