Fortuna Depot Museum

The Fortuna Depot Museum occupies the 1893 Northwestern Pacific Railroad depot, restored and moved into Rohner Park when the line shut down. Inside is the kind of dense small-town museum that improves the more you look: glass cases of arrowheads from the Wiyot, telegraph keys, a switchboard, old logging gear, hats and uniforms, and a wall of black-and-white photographs of Fortuna's main street in different decades.

The volunteers behind the counter usually know the story behind every object and will tell you if you let them. The museum is open afternoons in summer and weekends in the cooler months. Admission is donation-based and the depot building alone — a wood-frame California Stick-style structure painted Northern Pacific yellow — is worth a quick stop.
