The Mendocino Art Center has been the heart of the town's creative life since 1959. The campus includes several galleries showing work by local and regional artists, working studios, and a theatre that stages year-round productions. Classes in ceramics, printmaking, painting, and other media are open to visitors for single sessions or longer stays — a good option if you are in the area for more than a night or two. The gallery shows rotate regularly and the quality is consistently high for a town this size.

A story
The Art Center was founded in 1959 by painter Bill Zacha, who wanted to create a community studio where artists could work and teach alongside each other. It became the anchor institution that transformed Mendocino from a dying lumber town into a thriving arts colony — and it is still operating on the same block more than sixty years later.
