Trinidad State Beach

Sheltered sandy beach north of the headland with sea stacks and excellent tidepools

Trinidad State Beach is the main sandy beach at Trinidad, reached by a short steep trail from the parking area on Edwards Street. The beach sits in the shelter of Trinidad Head and is backed by forested bluffs, with a cluster of dramatic sea stacks just offshore. At low tide the rocks around the sea stacks expose extraordinary tidepools — large enough to hold octopus, sea stars in multiple species, nudibranchs, and dense aggregations of mussels.

Swimming is possible here in summer when the swell is down, though the water is always cold (around 12°C). The beach is never crowded by California standards. A trail continues north along the bluff from the state beach parking area, eventually reaching College Cove — a more sheltered and more secluded beach that requires a longer walk but rewards with more privacy and equally good tidepool access.
