Oakdale Cowboy Museum

A small downtown museum on F Street devoted to the working cowboys and rodeo riders of the Stanislaus foothills. The collection is modest — saddles, branding irons, photographs, ribbons and trophies, a wall of plaques for local rodeo champions — but the staff are locals who know the families behind the names and will happily explain who rode what and when.

The museum doubles as the unofficial visitor centre for the rodeo and for the wider cowboy events that run through the year. Allow half an hour. Closed Sundays and Mondays; admission is by donation.

A story
Oakdale's claim on the 'Cowboy Capital' title rests partly on numbers — the town has produced more world-champion rodeo cowboys per capita than anywhere else in the United States, a tradition that runs back to the working ranches of the Stanislaus foothills.
