South Coast Plaza

South Coast Plaza is the largest shopping mall in California — an enormous complex on Bristol Street with over 250 stores, anchored by every significant luxury brand: Cartier, Louis Vuitton, Chanel, Hermès, Gucci. For anyone interested in high-end retail, this is one of the great concentrations of it in North America.

The scale can be overwhelming, but the mall is well laid out across several interconnected buildings. The Jewel Court and Gardens sections house the most exclusive retailers; the main mall has the department stores. There are numerous restaurants inside, ranging from quick lunch options to proper sit-down dining. A pedestrian bridge connects to the Segerstrom Center for the Arts across the street.

A story
South Coast Plaza was built in 1967 on a lima bean field by Henry Segerstrom, a local bean farmer who gambled that Orange County was about to become wealthy enough to support luxury retail. He was right. The mall now generates more sales per square foot than any other shopping centre in the United States.
