Ocean Institute

A serious marine science and education centre on the outer point of the harbour breakwater. The Institute operates research vessels, runs school programmes for children of all ages, and opens to the public on weekends with hands-on exhibits, tide-pool tours, and tall-ship tours.

The main building has aquariums showing local sea life — leopard sharks, octopuses, sea stars, and small reef fish — and exhibits on oceanography, marine biology, and the maritime history of the California coast. Weekend programmes often include shark feedings, behind-the-scenes lab tours, and excursions on the research vessel. Open Saturday and Sunday; admission is modest. It is the best half-day activity in town for families, and credible for adults too.

A story
The Ocean Institute kept a full-size replica of the 19th-century merchant ship Pilgrim — the vessel Richard Henry Dana sailed on, and whose hide-trading trips to this coast he chronicled in Two Years Before the Mast. The replica was used as a floating classroom for schoolchildren for over four decades. In March 2020, the Pilgrim sank at her moorings during a winter storm, in a tragedy that locals still mention. A new tall ship, the Spirit of Dana Point, now anchors the harbour and continues the educational mission.
