The Newport Pier was first built in 1888 as McFadden's Wharf — a working wharf for shipping lumber and produce by rail to inland California. Today's pier, rebuilt several times, is 980 feet long and a popular spot for fishing without a licence, sunsets, and walking off a big breakfast at one of the cafes at the base.
The fish market at the foot of the pier, run by the few remaining dory fishermen, is one of the few authentic working-fisherman scenes left on the southern California coast. Arrive early — by 10am the boats are often sold out. The flat boardwalk between Newport Pier and Balboa Pier, about 1.5 miles to the south, is the best bike ride in town.
