San Diego has more craft breweries per capita than almost any other American city, and the quality across the range is unusually consistent. The city's style heritage is the West Coast IPA — bitter, dry, aromatic — but the scene has diversified into sours, lagers, stouts, and experimental formats over the past decade.
North Park is the most walkable brewery district: Modern Times, Thorn Street, NZXT (formerly Resident Brewing), and Eppig Brewing are within a ten-minute walk of each other along 30th Street. Miramar, north of Mission Hills, is the industrial zone where larger production breweries cluster — Stone Brewing, Alesmith, and Ballast Point have taprooms here with substantial food programs attached.
The San Diego Brew Festival runs each summer and covers most of the significant local operations in a single afternoon. For independent exploration, the neighbourhood tasting rooms are more interesting than the large festivals: smaller spaces, direct access to brewers, and the ability to taste current and experimental batches.
