Ocean Beach is the part of San Diego that refused to gentrify entirely. The main street, Newport Avenue, runs from the pier down through a neighbourhood of antique stores, surf shops, vintage clothing, and bars that have been in the same location since the 1970s. The beach is wide, the vibe is slow, and dogs are allowed in the southern section near the pier — meaning Ocean Beach Dog Beach is legitimately one of the best off-leash urban beaches in the country.
The Ocean Beach Pier is the longest wooden pier on the West Coast, jutting a quarter-mile into the Pacific. The fishing crowd that uses it at dawn gives way to walkers and tourists by mid-morning. The neighbourhood feels like what Mission Beach was before it became a summer party destination — a place people actually live in, with a strong local identity and no particular interest in the visitor-facing polish of other San Diego beach communities.
