Haight-Ashbury

Counterculture ground zero, now a strip of vintage shops and Victorian houses

Address Haight St and Ashbury St

The corner of Haight and Ashbury streets was ground zero of the Summer of Love in 1967, and the neighbourhood still trades on that legacy -- though the head shops and tie-dye have given way to vintage clothing stores, independent bookshops, and Amoeba Music, one of the largest record stores in the country. The Victorian houses along the surrounding streets are some of the finest in the city.

Haight Street itself is a good walk, running from the eastern edge of Golden Gate Park through the commercial strip and down into the Lower Haight, which has a scrappier, more local feel. Buena Vista Park, the oldest park in San Francisco, rises just south of the street with views across the city.
