San Mateo's Central Park is a genuine neighborhood park with a Japanese garden, a small train for children, a bandstand, and a rose garden that peaks in May and June. The Japanese garden — designed in 1966 with a koi pond, a teahouse, and a Moon Bridge — is surprisingly peaceful on a weekday morning. The park hosts a farmers market on Saturdays.
