Sushi Yoshizumi

Michelin-starred omakase counter in an unlikely suburban strip

Sushi Yoshizumi is one of the more improbable Michelin-starred restaurants in the Bay Area: a small omakase counter on East 4th Avenue in San Mateo, well off the usual circuits of food tourism. Chef Akira Yoshizumi serves a fixed multi-course tasting menu focused on fish sourced from Japan — the quality is serious, the room is intimate, and the experience is nothing like the sushi conveyor belts that dominate the neighbourhood.

Reservations are essential and book out weeks in advance. The restaurant seats a small number of diners per service, so the pace is unhurried. At 325 East 4th Avenue, downtown San Mateo.
