Saratoga Village

Walkable downtown strip along Big Basin Way

The compact village centre along Big Basin Way is the heart of Saratoga: three blocks of restaurants, wine bars, boutiques and art galleries tucked under mature trees, with the wooded foothills rising directly behind. The architecture is a mix of 19th-century clapboard, Mission Revival and modern infill, all kept low-rise by strict zoning that has limited downtown to two storeys for decades.

Worth wandering for an hour, especially around sunset when the patios fill up. The Saratoga Historical Foundation runs a small museum in the 1904 McWilliams House at the south end of the strip, with rotating exhibits on the town's lumber, fruit and wine-making past. Most restaurants offer outdoor seating; the bigger names — Plumed Horse, the Basin, Trevese — sit alongside more casual cafes and a few good wine-tasting rooms.
