Bucks Lake Wilderness

Bucks Lake Wilderness, about 17 miles southwest of Quincy, protects 23,000 acres of high Sierra country: granite peaks, glacial lakes, meadows, and dense mixed-conifer forest. The Pacific Crest Trail runs through the heart of it. Day hikes are possible from the Bucks Lake trailhead, and the lake itself — at about 5,150 feet elevation — is excellent for trout fishing.

The wilderness requires a permit for overnight camping. Bring bear canisters — the bear population is healthy. Water is plentiful but should be filtered. Access is via Forest Road 33 from Quincy; the road is paved to the Bucks Lake dam and then becomes dirt.

A story
The Pacific Crest Trail passes through the Bucks Lake Wilderness for about 25 miles, crossing some of the most remote country in the northern Sierra Nevada. Thru-hikers making the 2,650-mile journey from Mexico to Canada typically pass through in August, lean and purposeful. Quincy is a popular resupply stop — the post office sees dozens of hikers' food packages arrive each week through the summer.
