Fletcher Cove

Main beach access in Solana Beach, with surf, tide pools, and bluff-top whale watching

Fletcher Cove is the main beach access point in Solana Beach — a small sandy cove at the foot of the sandstone bluffs, reached via a ramp from the clifftop park. The break here is popular with surfers; the waves are generally better suited to intermediate and experienced riders than to beginners. At low tide, the rocky reef to the north exposes tide pools with anemones, starfish, and hermit crabs.

The clifftops above the cove are good for whale watching in the winter and early spring, when California gray whales pass close inshore during their annual migration between Alaska and Baja California. The bluffs are also popular with sunset walkers. Parking at the cove can be tight in summer; arriving early or using the train station a short walk away is advisable.
