San Elijo Lagoon

One of the largest remaining coastal wetlands in San Diego County, good for birdwatching and kayaking

San Elijo Lagoon Ecological Reserve straddles the Solana Beach–Encinitas border, covering around 1,000 acres of wetland, salt marsh, and upland habitat — one of the largest remaining coastal wetland systems in southern California. The lagoon supports over 300 bird species, including great blue herons, ospreys, egrets, and seasonal shorebirds during migration. It is a reliable spot for birding year-round.

A network of trails runs around the lagoon's northern and southern shores, ranging from short flat walks to longer loops through the coastal sage scrub. The trailhead on Manchester Avenue (north of the lagoon) is the main access point. Kayak rentals are available seasonally from Cardiff-by-the-Sea to the north. The lagoon is also visible from Lomas Santa Fe Drive as you approach Solana Beach from the east.
