One of the few remnants of the area's actual mining history that you can still visit, the Hidee Gold Mine on Chase Gulch Road offers guided underground tours through a working historic mine. You descend into the tunnels in hard hats to see the original ore veins, hand-drilling marks, and equipment left from the 19th and early 20th century gold rush.
The tour is run seasonally (typically summer weekends) and gives a genuine sense of what the miners who built the towns above actually did underground. It is a useful counterpoint to the casino experience — a reminder that the money flooding through Black Hawk today has a direct ancestor in the men who once dug for it with picks.
