Colorado is defined by the Rocky Mountains. The peaks run right through the middle of the state, creating a landscape of dramatic contrasts — alpine tundra above the treeline, red rock canyons in the west, and the vast high plains stretching east toward Kansas. With over 50 summits topping 14,000 feet, this is one of the most vertical places in North America, and that shapes everything about how people live and visit here.
Denver is the natural gateway, a genuine city at the foot of the mountains with a walkable downtown, excellent restaurants, and more breweries than you can work through in a week. Boulder, 30 miles northwest, is its crunchy, outdoorsy counterpart — a college town wedged against the Flatirons where people bike to work and hike after. Colorado Springs sits at the base of Pikes Peak to the south, home to Garden of the Gods and the US Air Force Academy.
The ski resorts are world-famous. Vail, Aspen, Telluride, Steamboat Springs, Breckenridge — each has its own character, from Aspen's glitz to Telluride's end-of-the-road charm. But Colorado is not just a winter destination. Summer brings mountain biking, whitewater rafting on the Arkansas and Colorado rivers, fly fishing on gold medal streams, and hiking through some of the most spectacular scenery in the country. Rocky Mountain National Park draws millions with its alpine lakes and elk-filled meadows. Mesa Verde National Park preserves extraordinary Ancestral Puebloan cliff dwellings in the southwest corner. Great Sand Dunes National Park, where 750-foot dunes rise against the Sangre de Cristo Mountains, is one of the most surreal landscapes in America.
Colorado has a laid-back, outdoor-oriented culture that runs deep. The craft beer scene is among the best in the country — the state has over 400 breweries, and even small mountain towns tend to have at least one good taproom. Colorado was also one of the first US states to legalize recreational cannabis, and dispensaries are now a routine part of the landscape. The sun shines more than 300 days a year, the air is dry, and the people tend to be friendly and unpretentious. It is an easy state to enjoy.
