Garden of the Gods is a public park of dramatic red sandstone formations rising from the foothills at the western edge of Colorado Springs. The towering rocks — some over 300 feet tall — glow red and orange against the blue sky and the snow-capped backdrop of Pikes Peak. Admission is free, and the park is open year-round.
The main paved road loops through the park and takes you past the most famous formations, but the real pleasure is getting out of the car and walking the network of trails. Rock climbing is popular on several designated formations. The Visitor and Nature Center has exhibits on the geology and a good view of the park from its terrace.
Come at sunrise if you can — the early light on the red rock is unforgettable.
