Five Points, just east of downtown where five streets cross, is the historic centre of Black Denver — once known as "the Harlem of the West" for the jazz clubs along Welton Street that hosted Billie Holiday, Duke Ellington, Charlie Parker and Miles Davis on Coast-to-Coast tours. The Roxy and the Rossonian were the legendary venues; the latter is being restored.
Today Five Points is gentrifying fast but the historic core is intact: the Black American West Museum, the Sonny Lawson ballfield, the soul food at Welton Street Cafe. RTD light rail runs straight down Welton; the L line connects you to RiNo in five minutes and downtown in ten.
