South Park City is an open-air museum on the west end of Front Street that recreates a 19th-century Colorado mining community with 43 original buildings — moved here from sites across Park County and restored to their period condition. Saloon, general store, schoolhouse, printing office, blacksmith shop, dentist's office: the full range of a functioning gold rush town is represented, with period furnishings and equipment throughout.
The collection of Victorian-era artefacts inside the buildings is substantial — tens of thousands of original items, mostly from the 1860s to 1890s, none of it reproduction. What makes South Park City more interesting than many such reconstructions is the density of the collection and the quality of the individual pieces. Open late May to mid-October; closed in winter.
