Delaware Seashore State Park

Delaware Seashore State Park stretches along the coast just north of Bethany Beach, preserving six miles of ocean and bay shoreline between the built-up resort towns. It's the best place in the Bethany area for uncrowded beach access, surf fishing, and quiet walks along the dunes.

The park has ocean swimming areas with lifeguards in summer, a 295-slip marina, boat ramp, and good surf fishing from the Indian River Inlet jetties. A campground runs the length of the park, making it possible to stay inside the park itself rather than in the town. Bay-side access is worth exploring for kayaking and crabbing, with calmer water and excellent birding in the tidal marshes.

A story
Delaware Seashore State Park occupies the barrier strip between the Atlantic Ocean and Rehoboth Bay, a narrow band of land that has been reshaped by storms many times over the centuries. The Indian River Inlet, which cuts through the park, was artificially stabilised in the 1930s after storms had repeatedly opened and closed it; the resulting permanent inlet created the excellent surf fishing conditions the park is known for.
