Bethany Beach

Quiet Delaware beach town with a short boardwalk, summer bandstand concerts, and family-focused sands.

Bethany Beach is a small, family-oriented beach town on the Delaware coast, often called one of the "Quiet Resorts" along with Fenwick Island and South Bethany. It lacks the boardwalk amusements and nightlife of Rehoboth Beach a few miles north, and that is exactly the point — people come here for the beach itself and not much else.

The beach is wide and clean, with a short boardwalk and a bandstand that hosts free concerts on summer evenings. The town centre has a handful of restaurants and ice cream shops along Garfield Parkway, and the Bethany Beach Nature Center has marshland trails and exhibits a short walk away. Delaware Seashore State Park is just north of town, preserving six miles of ocean and bay shoreline with surf fishing at the Indian River Inlet jetties and a campground. The Freeman Arts Pavilion near Selbyville runs an outdoor performing arts season through the summer.

Bethany is a popular weekend and summer rental destination for families from the Washington, D.C. and Baltimore area. September is arguably the best month to visit: the water is at its warmest after the summer's heat, the beaches thin out, and the prices drop.

When to Go

Bethany Beach is a seasonal resort. The peak season runs from Memorial Day (late May) through Labor Day (early September), when the beaches are busy, all the restaurants and shops are open, and weekend traffic on Route 1 can be brutal. July and August are the most crowded months.

The shoulder seasons are increasingly attractive: late May and June offer warm weather before the crowds peak, and September is arguably the best month to visit — the water is at its warmest from the summer's heat, the beaches are quieter, and the prices drop significantly. Many seasonal businesses stay open through October.

From November through April, Bethany is effectively a ghost town. A few year-round residents keep a handful of places open, but this is not a place for an off-season beach trip unless you specifically want long, empty beaches and closed restaurants.
