Air Mobility Command Museum

The Air Mobility Command Museum at Dover Air Force Base is one of the best military aviation collections on the East Coast. Housed in a 1941 hangar and spread across the surrounding grounds, the collection spans from World War II transport aircraft through Cold War-era jets and helicopters to the modern strategic airlift fleet. The museum's strength is in the transport and logistics aircraft that rarely get the attention given to fighters and bombers — the C-47s, C-141s, and C-5 Galaxies that actually moved the troops, equipment, and supplies.

Access requires passing through the base security checkpoint at Gate 1 on Route 9. US citizens need a photo ID; foreign nationals should check the museum's current requirements before visiting. Admission is free. The museum is open Tuesday through Sunday.

A story
Dover Air Force Base handles more military cargo than any other air base in the United States, and has done so since World War II. The base's most solemn function — receiving the remains of American military personnel killed abroad — is handled here as well. The museum deliberately addresses this history alongside the more triumphant story of Cold War aviation.
