Battery Park occupies the southern tip of New Castle's historic core, a thin strip of riverfront land between the Delaware River and Delaware Street. The park is named for the gun battery that once protected the town from river attack. Today it is a pleasant open green with a bandstand, benches, and direct views across the wide Delaware to the New Jersey shore.
This is where William Penn stepped ashore in 1682 to take possession of his American lands — a moment commemorated by a small marker in the park. Standing here on the river bank, looking at the broad tidal river and the industrial landscape across the water, you can feel both the colonial significance of the spot and the dramatic change in fortune since. The park connects to the riverfront promenade that runs along The Strand, linking the main historic sites.
