Gumbo Limbo Nature Center

Gumbo Limbo Nature Center is Boca's best small nature stop, set among coastal hammock beside the barrier island. Boardwalks lead through gumbo-limbo trees, sea grapes, and mangroves, while aquariums and turtle exhibits explain the reef and nesting-beach ecology just offshore.

It is especially good with children, but adults should not dismiss it as a school-trip stop. The short trails give a quick sense of what southeast Florida looked like before condos, seawalls, and highways took over the coast.

A story
The name comes from the gumbo-limbo tree, sometimes called the tourist tree because its red, peeling bark looks like sunburned skin. It is a good joke, but also a useful clue: this is a place that explains the native coastal hammock rather than just the beach.
